my father recently passed away. I'm not sure if he had a will. If he did not, do I have any legal right to any of his estate? My step mother is legally married to my father and there is no other natural or adopted children. We both rresided in Illinois.

If your father passed away without a will, his estate is an intestate estate and will be distributed pursuant a statute. A general rule is that a spouse gets 1/2 and children shares the rest. Since you do not have any siblings, your share will be 1/2 of the estate.
