Question

I accepted a job offer in another state. I have written documents about my start date, etc. My wife and I both left good paying stable jobs in order for me to take this position with a new company. My new employer keeps putting off my start date, It has now been 3 months since I moved my family. Do I have any legal options here? I have been searching for other employment but still have not found anything. It has been 3 months since we have had a pay check and bills are not getting paid. Before the move, our bills were paid and we had good credit. Now, our credit is shot and we have no more savings to live on. I need to know if there is anything we can do legally. Thank you for your help.

You may have a detrimental reliance claim or similar claim against the employer who offered the new position but has been putting you off. The law on this point varies state to state. Louisiana law likely would not allow you to recover under the facts you have given, but current law in the other state, not identified in your question, may allow such a recovery. You should contact an attorney there to inquire as to whether you have a viable claim. The foregoing is intended as legal information concerning the question asked, but is not intended as legal advice upon which the requesting party may rely in guiding their actions. Rather, the requesting party should consult an attorney for a personal consultation and advice for a full consideration of their situation and rendition of legal advice.
